And this is why I say, yet again, that America should move onto the European/Asian system of paying restaurant service staff a fair wage so they don’t have to rely on tips. These people come in because your restaurants exist to feed them. They don’t come in to pay anyone’s bills. The restaurant wants customers then pay your damn staff to do their jobs without having to rely on the assholes to fork out discretionary payments to earn enough to live off.
Sure we can keep pointing the finger at the dregs of society for not paying tips but when oh when is the industry going to get its act together and just damn well pay people properly to do their jobs???

You might have a point Fiona, but the fact is that not how our system works. The food service industry sticks the the tipping policy 1) because with tips, they have to pay their staff less, which I’m sure has a nice effect on their taxes and 2) because the majority of the citizens of the United States enjoy having the ability to pay less for shitty service and more for great service. Hence the “service” portion of that statement and title of the industry. I never once heard the lady in the video complain about the quality of the service. Had she said “the service sucked, my drink was never filled, my food was wrong and God forbid he gave the check to the man of the table (haha)” I might would have been a little more willing to see her side of the tale.
But when I go to a restaurant I know that I will have to tip and so yes, I take that into consideration as I decide whether to order a Filet Minion or a damn cheese burger. I also look at the price of a meal before I order it so that I am no surprised when the ticket comes out. I don’t know how many times I have seen a friend get their ticket and be surprised at the total, how hard is it to do a rough estimate for the total?
People need to fucking wake up and pay attention. Think through your actions before you act.

She has a point when she says ‘you chose this job … some days it’s good some days it’s bad’. She’s forgetting the rest of the sentence though ….. ‘you can tell when it’s a good day when WHITE people walk in, and a bad day when BLACK people walk in’.
Also, for the record; a good indicator that you can’t afford filet mignon is when you say it with that ‘look at me I’m making fun of rich people’ voice like she did. Go back to ‘McDonald’s or Taco Bell’, both of which you seem to be thoroughly acquainted with.

I do agree with Fiona on this. I’ve always been appalled with the low wages these waiters/waitresses get–in AMERICA of all places. Even working at Wal-mart, my worst soul-sucking rape session of a job, I still got paid minimum wage.
These days, I really think the idea is a tip is left if the person serving did a better than minimum job.
Why NOT increase their pay to at least minimum wage, instead of paying them (and treating them) as slaves?

Josh, the whole issue is you DON’T have to tip. But you do have to pay the price printed on the menu. So until decent salaries are reflected through menu prices, tipping will remain optional. If tipping was the best way to push service standards, it would be a prerequisite to all service jobs. But it isn’t. So if it can work in other service jobs, it can work in the F&B industry. And does in other places.

I can understand that Wal-Mart pays minimum wage. However, how many times did you leave an incredibly busy shift at Wal-Mart with two to three hundred dollars in cash in your pocket? I’m guessing none, unless you robbed someone in the parking lot.
Most people take jobs as servers because there is significant income potential there, which is why we get so angry when people like this lady get all self-righteous and try to blame their ignorance on us for having the job in the first place.
I bet she’s the type that walks past the hostess and seats herself.

Man. This woman has a foul mouth. She obviously has no idea how things work. I noticed she even said her sister is a waitress and her sister told her that they take tipping personally. I share the same sentiment that has been shared before, if you can’t afford to tip then you can’t afford to eat out.
I find it hilarious that this woman decided to put something like this on the internet. While she may have gotten by with complaining about the waiter following them to the car, she certainly didn’t help her case much by ranting and raving and showing her ass to the entire world. I miss the days before the internet when the village idiot would stay in their own village.

If you can’t afford to tip 20%, don’t go out to eat. I don’t care if the service sucked. I always tip 20%, and if the service was better than average I’ll tip up to 50%. Few extra dollars won’t hurt ya, promise.

You know Fiona’s the type who tells waiters that she won’t tip because she thinks it’s a bad system which she won’t support because she feels that they should be paid more. While all she’s really doing is screwing the waiter and not doing anything to change the system. I really, really hate people like that. They could care less about the system, they’re just cheap assholes.

Wow. Just wow. This is the kind of ignorant, unrefined person that waiters fear to get. Most of americans know that tipping is an institution. 10% for bad service, 15% for average srvice, 20% for good service. Unless the service sucks the sweat off a dead dog’s nuts, the waiter is getting something. $8 on a $160 check? 5%? That’s cheap, and that woman is rude and selfish. Notice when she complains to the manager, she doesn’t say “I was a cheap ass”, she says the waiter was harrassing her. People like her shouldn’t go out to eat. I am embarassed and shamed for that woman.
And yet, she claims racism? Unbelievable.

I hope that when (or if) your children grow up they will at least be able to speak English. If you’re going to show that fat ass of yours, you need to lose 20 pounds of it first. My wish for you is that you become a server in a nice restaurant and have to deal with customers like yourself and your girlfriends who don’t have a clue or the ability to calculate a proper tip. My guess is that the restaurant doesn’t take food stamps or maybe you could have afforded to do the right thing.

This is one stupid biotch. People like this give creedence to the futuristic notion of having to qualify minimum standards to have children. These kids of hers will never have a chance in life until they leave or get kicked out of this dummy’s home.
I would be willing to bet good money that a.) the child in the background is fatherless, b.) this woman recieves some form of government assistance (i.e., food stamps, welfare, etc.), and c.) this woman is in debt, and d.) she has a very low credit rating.
How do I know this? Because I am a genious? Nope. Because she basically told us these things through her ignorant behavior and idiocy.
I would be willing to bet money at 2-1 odds (I risk $1 to win $2) that this woman is a high school dropout. As crappy as most of our public schools are, she could have slipped through the cracks and actually have a H.S. degree.

I’d like to know — I mean — REALLY want to understand where this woman’s sense of entitlement comes from because it seems to be a growing problem. If you can’t afford or don’t want to tip at least 15%, then your ass is entitled to stay home.
And what’s with the “discrimination” BS?! I’ve waited tables in nice restaurants in which servers were white, black, and asian. In 2 of these restaurants, tables were assigned to servers on a rotating basis, and so I would be assigned every fourth or fifth available table no matter where they were seated (no server sections). All of the servers, regardless of race, would bemoan when a certain demographic entered and sat down at the next open table because there was a very good chance that despite the extra effort to be accommodating and prompt, your work would go untipped and your hourly wages would drop to minimum or below. So, the idiot in this video is just crystalizing a tired stereotype and then crying racism.

Wow! This has got to be the biggest idiot I’ve ever seen. Everyone should know that if you go out to eat at a restaurant that serves decent food you need to leave a tip…here’s a good rule of thumb to follow:
Fair service = 10%
Good service = 15%
Awesome service = 20%
With an $8 tip I would have thought the server came right up and smacked you across the face

I agree with most of the content on this website.
One thing I don’t agree on though is the tipping system in the U.S.
In Australia people tip because someone provides good service they also tip because the food was good. In Australia and other places around the World, they include the wages of their workers in the products that they sell; they don’t depend on tips to pay their workers.
Don’t get me wrong though, people in Australia still tip, but we tip if people do a good job.

I don’t think that race is an issue here, its ignorance, on the guests behalf. If you don’t have the money to leave a proper tip then go to taco bell ( a good rule of thumb is to calculate the tip into your bill, if you can’t afford the dinner plus tip than get something less expensive) . I am a recent college grad ( on the job hunt for 6 months) and if any body says “you don’t like your job get another one” hasn’t appreciated the full effects of our shrinking economy and the lack of jobs there are. I am stuck waiting tables and dealing with trash like you daily. This is a shameful display of ignorance and arrogance and I feel terribly sorry for your children.

he was in a higher in place select prime beef cuts and seafood salad plus 6 drinks for 160 odd bucks
they left 8
she indicated he paid tip out or share to 3 or more people
I paid 4% in top steakhouse and only tipped bus and bar so this guy was paying more than 4% I suspect
Her party tipped sub 5% and this waiter pays min of 4% so he made 1% BUT wait Uncle Sam requires him to declare *% and its recommended 10 % of sales to avoid being audited.
thus when you calculate he ACTUAL earnings the server PAID to wait on these ghetto bitches and probably bothered his neighboring tables by their dress, decorum, and topics of dinner convo.
So some othe other tables could have been self entitled asses and lowered their tips because it was the server’s fault his guest were offensive to those around him.
Needless to say a posse of servers and support staff and maybe some of the kitchen gang need to head to the gheeto bitches job and give em a beat down to remember

first of all , Don’t go out if you can’t afford it,,, And if you know you are going to a high priced restaraunt(which I doubt your ignorant ass could afford) you should know that the servers are expecting a tip related to the bill…. you should’ve of gone to taco bell sounds like thats all you can afford and guess what? you don’t have to tip at Taco Bell!!!!!!!!
And saying race was an issue: from your story it didn’t sound like the server said anything about race.. You did,, So, I think the only person who is racial in this story is you!!!!!
Being a waitress myself if i saw you walk into my restaraunt and were seated at my table, I would make sure i earned that 50 cents you would tip by not giving you good service!!!!!
