While not taking any sides, just want to point out that for Table #1 Group 2, $53.16 + $6.84 = $60 exact. So maybe it was cash? (I know someone who has the habit of making round numbers even for credit cards). But since you said that you have 15%, 18%, and 20% calculated out already, then maybe they should've rounded up instead.

My 2 cents.

I'm from the UK and here the waiters are paid more so tipping is generally between 5 or 10% depending on where you are. (unless I've been under tipping all these years...)

When I went to Canada on my honeymoon I read that you should tip 15% so we did. We had a meal in a really expensive restaurant which came to about $300 (US Dollars) just for the two of us. We tipped 15% ($45) - which to me even on its own is a lot of money.

Do you still tip 15 or 20% even when the meal is really expensive (and there are only two of you eating)? I would assume in that sort of restaurant the waiters were paid quite well.

I should add the meal, and the service was excellent, and I had no problems with leaving the tip, which from what I had read, was the right tip.

My question really centres on the question of scale. I can understand tipping 15 or 20% where there are four of you and the meal costs $100, but does this still stand when the meal costs a lot more (and there are less of you)?

I've worked in a resturant for about 7 months now and can agree with the fact black people tip bad. On new years i gave nearly a 50% tip because it sucks having to work on new years eve.

yea david2, 15 percent even on upper end food, the less the food cost the higher you can tip, like if its only a 10 dollar meal, it wouldnt be absurd to drop 3 bucks if the service was good for a tip. but same rules apply, 15 percent if the service meets all your expectations, more if its great, less if its bad, some people have 18 percent as their starting point while others have 20. black people usually tip around 10 percent or they seem to like the rule "5 dollars on anything"

Here's my 2 cents, literally. I used to run a restaurant in an airport. This was not a standard airport establishment. We had table service, menus, freshly prepared food made to order...etc. It was not uncommon for us to be slammed every day during the summer, especially at lunch. One day, slammed as usual, this party of 19, yes 19 black people came in. I had to pull 6 tables together for this party.(a combo of 2 and 4 tops) Let the fun ensue. I cannot tell you how many times I had to go to that table for over two hours. Everyone wanted 2 drinks, extra straws, every sauce imaginable, more ice, this, that, the other. Then came order time. All I will say is after taking everyone's order, with multiple changes during the entire time, I take it to the kitchen, by the time I come back out, they wanted to change at least 15 more things on the order. This went on and on. I must have made over 150 trips to that table. All the while a smile on my face, and some damn good service. After said nightmare meal is done, I ask how they would like the checks, that was a whole other ordeal that could compromise a story in itself. Upon finally getting all checks paid, they leave. By this time, the whole 1/4 of the restaurant they had occupied, looked like a fricking cat 5 hurricane went through. The tip? ......... 2 cents.

Yeah, thanks and have a nice day.

well i am on your side here. i dont agree with racism, but calling out a stereotype that has statistical evidence back it up isnt racism, its whatever race that is represented in a bad light bringing it upon themselves. stereotypes are not created in a vacuum by some asshole who dislikes people of different races. i am also all for realizing historical circumstances that might play a part in present day bad behavior, but tipping does not fall into that category either. so basically, this is a call to black people to stop making themselves as an entire race look cheap. i mean, it does a disservice to those blacks who dont fall into the stereotype as well, and if i were one of them i would be pissed at my brothers and sisters. so much for the "jews are cheap" stereotype. that certainly isnt holding up here.

Worst table in my serving HISTORY... the day of my birthday I was already working a 15 hour shift straight through with no break. My father was driving from 6 hours to pick me up and spend the day with me. 20 Minutes before I am due to get off of work a party of 20 people came in and took up my entire section. The resturant that I worked at mandated that you had to take all tables that came into your section. My manager knew that I was due to leave in 20 minutes and that I had been working 15 hours already, and he still put the table in my section because I was the one who could handle a party that big. At this resturant all checks are done by hand. Each total, each ticket order, every little special thing that you have to change or add has to be written on the ticket. 16 seperate checks, and 5 different orders later I was in no mood to enjoy my birthday... because it was also 3 hours later! Each of the 5 times that they added more to their order, I had to change their ticket. I had to get a new seperate ticket book for that table because there was so much ink on the first tickets I couldn't read them because they had been re-written so many times. And, yes... I would have waited to total up, but it was resturant policy to have everything totaled up at any given time after the order was taken so that they could be handed their check. I worked my ass off for these people. Drinks, after drinks, after drinks. I even gave them free Orange Juice refills because I didn't feel like messing with changing their tickets. Their ticket came to over 150 USD at a resturant where breakfast doesn't cost more then 5 bucks a person unless you are REALLY putting away some food. In the state of Texas if you have more then 8 people in one party it is law that you charge a 10% gratuity. Most places charge more then that. The resturant that I worked at had a no gratuity policy, so I wasn't allowed to place gratuity on their check. I received a grand total of negative 15 cents because they didn't leave the correct amount on the table. It is not that they didn't have enough money, no because I saw into the ladies walet. I heard them as they ran out the door saying that I could cover the change. I am not going to say what race these people were as there are quite a few small minded idiots that read this site... but I don't think I have to tell any you if you are a server. Did my manager stop them or call the police or anything... nope. All he made me do was stay an extra hour cleaning up the mess that they made. Yea for 19 hour shifts and not getting paid but 8 USD for the last 4 hours of someone else's shift. Yes, that is correct folks. 8 USD because in Texas the wage for severs is 2.13 USD an hour! Tip your servers people, because if not, they end up making a full days pay that is generally less then the meal that you just paid for.

It's very true that anecdotes aren't data, but do you really think there will ever be a study done to determine whether varioius races tip equally? Good luck with that. In the meantime all we have are anecdotes and experience to go on. . .
In the last place I waited tables, my experience was similar to the posts I am seeing here. Several different groups came in consistently, as they worked in the building where the restaurant was. A couple of black ladies came in 2-3 times a week, and regardless what they ordered left 50 cents as tip. 2 quarters each. I bent over backwards, trying to see if there was some way to really make them happy with the service and more generous. No go. Finally, one day, I asked. I said, Ladies, I gotta know. Is there a particular reason why you only ever tip 50 cents? Is it something about the service? Or, maybe you just don't like me, personally? And one of them looked me square in the eye and said "You should be grateful I tip at all, since I don't have to. I'm a secretary. I work hard for my money." Hmm. like waitresses don't, I guess. Then she complained to the manager that I was rude and I got written up. This after literally months of giving it my all.
Yvonne, another waitron who worked there just shook her head and said, "What's wrong with you, girl? Don't you know sisters never tip? I wait on them too, but I just offer my service up to God." So, that's what I did. I still waited on 'em. I still took good care of 'em, but I "offered it up to God." And just for the record, Yvonne never got but 50 cents out of them, either. So, go figure.

Haha... you haven't LIVED until you've had a group of blacks (not saying this racially... I'm white and my fiance` is black) came in and ran up a $107 ticket (each dinner is roughly $6 per person, so they put away some SERIOUS food). Ran me to death... I must have gone back to that table 80 times. I was the only waitress that night and had literally 120 other customers I was trying to wait on and only one cook. What did I get for that $107 ticket? 87 cents. If you think black people tip... wait tables in Georgia for awhile. You'll figure it out.

Girl stop! Black family of three and you got $5.00. Wow thats actually good! I've waited tables for 6 yrs. now and I have waited on people from all over the world, I guess it's the same everywhere. Black people that tip and very far and few in between. Not to mention, they talk to you like dirt, run you to death, expect better service than all the other customers, and if you refil a white person's drink before theirs.......You are being racist! And black females.....Need I say more.

I was talking to my sister who's also a server for many years and she slightly disagrees with Ryan. She says Mexican people tip the worst followed by African Americans. Then again I say her findings are skewed seeing as how she works in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood. Could be wrong though.

Ya know what, all you closed minded, piece of shit people who want to comment about how a black person did this and that and didn't tip you well enough or whatever... All races of people go out to eat, if you don't fucking like the way people tip, get out of the fucking business. I as well as most of you, only make 2.13 an hour, but blaming your bad tips on race? is this the fucking 1950s? This site, or yet, the fact that there is a section to bash african americans on this site, makes me fucking sick to my stomach. I am a server as well. I am white. I have a black step father, and he is probably the best tipper (better than me even) that i know. His standard, even bad service, is 20%. Two weeks ago we went to a very high class restaurant for his birthday, he paid, the bill was $480, for five people. He tipped $200. So all of you can go fuck yourselves for thinking that white people, or mexicans, or asians or anyone else don't tip bad..ever. I think, in all honesty, I have received more bad tips from white people than any other race. You all need to grow the fuck up, like i said earlier, if you don't like other people paying your bills, then get a fucking hourly job where you know what you're making every week. And did any of you ever think that your stereotyping can come through in your service? That just maybe people can sense that you have something against them? Screw you people. People like you are the reason there is reverse racism. You sick, self-righteous, close minded people make my skin crawl.

I would like to respond to a couple of posts about paying the server a gratuity on a more expensive meal when there are less people to serve. I would propose that the service industry has a different format through which they achieve upward mobility. Generally you're cutting your teeth in the service industry, you most likely start in a coffee shop, fast food, bistros, etc. Most of the people (whether they want to admit it to themselves or not) that work in higher end restaurants are professional servers and have chosen that for a career. As we all progress in our careers, we look for ways to increase our income. At the same time higher end restaurants are just like any other luxury. If you want real Prada, expect to pay 800 or more for Prada. It's Prada. You also aren't going to avoid buying a house because the real estate agent gets a bigger commission than you think they should because the house cost 250,000 instead of 100,000. You as a consumer do have the power to begrudge them upward mobility, but again you wouldn't want anyone thwarting yours and the person you may be begrudging doesn't have that power over you. If it's a matter of principle for you, than give this principle some thought. Thousands of people a week decide my wage, but for people that receive a living wage, only a small handful decide theirs. A lot of hardworking people are eating an anxiety that you don't have to so you can have a lovely dining experience. Hostility and stone throwing aren't necessary. It's just a reality. I gotta' tell, I love when someone else waits on me, even if they stink. I really really really appreciate it.

Ashley, if you stopped focusing on the fact that I pointed out the foilables of black people, you'd notice that I had THREE TIMES AS MANY STORIES ABOUT "STUCK-UP WHITE PEOPLE" ON MY SITE WHERE I MADE FUN OF WHITE PEOPLE.

But I guess you're too busy using that crutch of yours.

Ryan, I saw all of the "STUCK UP WHITE PEOPLE" stories as well, but let me guess, you're white?! My point is that reverse racism is fueled by shit like this, whether you have a stupid section on your site about white people or not. I guess the night I wrote that i was just really pissed off, I just don't think it's right to be so stereotypical... it's frustrating that there's nothing i can do about it...

dude I agree with this alot. I waited tables and everytime a huge black guy sits in your section you cringe.
Not racist just cuz he busts your ass and you get nothing for it.
I had a mom and son black table and no lie the mom went thru 11 diet cokes. The kid having to weigh 400 pounds drank 17 cokes. 20 ounce cups of coke. thats 340 ounces. roughly five 2 liters of coke. The total bill was like 28.90 they left thirty dollars and walked out. I got roughly a nickel a drink refill. Not worth it.
And yes if the food costs more you still tip 15%

I am a valet attendant at an Indian casino in a very upscale part of Southern California. The general tip is anywhere from 1-5 dollars, although it is not unusual to recieve 10-20 dollars. When I first started I assumed that the more expensive cars would tip you more. Boy, was I wrong. I would get $1 from brand new mercedes or lexus' and get $5 from average cars. Also, I along with every other valet I work with have noticed black people are by far the worst customers. In a busy night its not uncommon to have to wait as much as 10 minutes for your car. Most people understand, but black people began to complain after a minute or two. They tend to be very rude, extremley cheap, and expect better service than everyone else. We have this one black customer especially that NO ONE can stand. She comes out mad dogging everone, she drives a brand new mercedes slk and a GMC yukon denali on 22's. This BITCH never tips, when she comes out for her car she puts her cell phone to her ear but never talks. When you pull up her car she just ignores you and drives off. When I pull up her car I just get out and walk away. Also, jew's are bad tippers, they are so pround to tip you $1 ( i guess in their mind that is an excellent tip) after you pull up their S 500 mercedees.

One of the industry magazines DID do a study on tipping. On average blacks tip 13%. Whites tip 16.5%. While some of it may be a self fulfilling prophecy, as in black people don't tip well , so I will not give them good service, the majority of it is that 63%of black people surveyed were not aware of societal tipping rules as compared to only 30% of whites. Furthermore, after 16 yrs in the biz, I have found tipping is more of a class thing rather than a race thing. Poor people do not tip as well as rich/middle class people (although the rich will find more reasons not to tip) for good service and in this country there is a disproportionate percentage of the poor that are black.

Also, NPR and the New York Times, etc.... have done articles about this very subject with largely the same conclusions. Are they also Racists? NPR suggests a Restaurant Industry education campaign explaining tipping norms to ALL who dine in U.S. restaurants. Sounds like a good start to me.

i am a dealer at a casino and i totally agree that blacks are the worst tippers. younger blacks generally tip better. this also almost totally applies to asians and jews as well. as for ashley's comments... ashley, we're talking about MOST black people. and the reason that your black stepdad tips 20% is probably because your mom is a big fat blonde lady that drives him around and supports him financially.

it's definately true!! I wouldn't mind the bad tip part if it wasn't for the rude way they treat me. It seems like 90% of the black people that come into our restaurant make it their personal mission to get revenge on me for what every white person has doen to them throughout history. They act like they are miserable, and try to make me miserable too! Do they do this to black servers as well, or is it because I am white?

i read alot of the comments from peole on here who seem to think that people who say blacks don't tip are being racist. You wait on tables for just one day and see what you think. I'm not only talking about not getting tipped. I'm talking about the disrespect of handing someone nine cents after they busted their ass on your 76 dollar tab, i'm talking about getting negative, yes negative, tips. I'm talking about walking out, or running for that matter, without paying the bill. Only balck people have ever done this to me. And it is not ignorance, becasue even when you tell them it is worng or a friend tells them it is wrong they still do the same thing. Not to mention they treat you like shit and play the "i'm gonna complain about everything trying to get my meal free game." Think I'm racist? My family is black, they do tip (there are some exceptions to the rule), and I give everyone who comes into my section the benefit of the doubt. That is why I get so pissed because I try my hardest to have faith in people, and 9 out of 10 they let me down.

I posted this on another forum in response to the question as to why african americans don't tip well, and the conversation of course stagnated into a "yes they do, no they don't " conversation, so I posted this reply.

Before I begin, I'd like to state that my comments are made only to tipping practices in typical dining and delivery settings inside the United States, and with Reference to African American people mentioned herein, that term is to mean "Black Americans" (presumably) born in this country.

This subject came up at my office recently, and so I did a Google search hoping to find some answers. I will say that in the 6 years that it took me to work my way through college, I delivered Pizza for the same restaurant for 3 of those years. Now granted a small college town in East Texas is a bit of a microcosm, and many of you may think that my observations, which are just that, factual observations, may not be valid, so take them as you will. I delivered alongside a very culturally, sexually(meaning both gender and orientation), and racially diverse group, and we were a very tight crew. We all looked out for each other, and the only true animosity that existed was between this 7 foot tall red-headed guy named Erik (looked like the fat guy off super troopers) and this little short skinny piano-playing guy from turkey with long black hair named Burak (looked like Yani without the mustache). Over 3 years, delivering to parts of a population that was fairly static (natives) and parts that were ever changing (students), it became clear to everyone, because we all talked openly about it, that certain groups (on the whole, not every single member of that group), tended to follow certain trends in their views on gratuity.

We noticed several things, but the most noticeable were the following:
Among Student Patrons:
1. Female patrons tipped male drivers better than they tipped female drivers (harshly so).
2. Male patrons tipped female drivers better than they tipped male drivers, but still tipped male drivers fairly (with the exception of African American male student patrons)
3. African American Male students tipped the least % and also were most likely to not tip at all.
4. African American Female students seemed to tip about the same as female students of other ethnicities.

Among Permanent Townsfolk:
1. African American Patrons, regardless of gender or perceived social status (based on neighborhood and assumed socio-economic standing) tipped the worst % and had the highest % of not tipping at all.
2. Upper middle class to wealthy Caucasians tipped almost as little as African American Patrons, but rarely would abscond entirely on the tip.
3. Middle to lower middle class Caucasian families tipped the best across the board.

These observations were universally agreed and commented upon by all delivery personnel regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender, etc., and remained predictably stable over my 3 years.

I will relay one more set of observations before relaying my conclusions, though I concede they are second hand and from my little brother who worked his way through college waiting tables in a much larger city (Dallas) and 7 years after my college days. My little brother worked at Papadeaux's for a brief stint, and then 3 forks until he graduated and went on the work in the IT Arena. Papadeaux's has a very extensive African American Patronage (as it did when my wife worked at a Papadeaux's in Houston in her early 20's). They also have an insanely intensive server training program such that if you have worked at a Papadeaux's and can get a positive reference, you are considered fit to work almost anywhere in the service industry. During his first two weeks, he got his service baptism under fire having tables pawned off on him that other servers did not want, and ended up waiting almost exclusively on African American Patrons. There is not need to wax poetic about how things went, so I'll cut to the chase and say after two weeks, it was apparent to him that he could not afford to work at this restaurant, so applied and was accepted for a server position at 3 Forks due in part to his brief yet poignant experience at Papadeaux's. He relayed that almost immediately, he was making some astonishing multiple of what his gratuity income had been at Papadeaux's, but noted that he still had seemingly well to do African American patrons stiff him on the tip, or tip so little as to be insulting. For those of you who will say "well he was expecting it, so he didn't try as hard," don't bother. My little brother is like the David Copperfield of waiting tables. If you asked for something, he'd be as likely to produce it from behind your ear with a waive of his hand as to take off on a dead sprint to retrieve it. He has an impeccable work ethic, and cannot resist a challenge, and to him, that's what it was every time he was seated with an African American Patron, couple, or party. He would set out every time to disprove this "myth" which he failed to do all but a scant few times. We talked about it several times. These topics were always fascinating to us because we both grew up in a backwater small Texas town where racism is rampant even if under one's breath, but our mother made good and damn sure that the local vernacular didn't take hold with her two sons, and would lay a hand across any child's mouth in the neighborhood, across whose lips a racial slur erupted. In our conversations, my brother expressed frustration not so much at the fact that it "did" happen, but due to his complete inability to understand "why" it happened.
Once he even commented that it seemed the harder he tried, the worse the gratuity. I am certain that this particular observation was more a product of frustration than unbiased observation, though he did mention that his frustration was no longer tied to his pay as the number of African American patrons was so low as not to adversely affect his pay.

The sad thing is that again, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, these where occurrences common to, observed by, and commented on by the entire wait staff. They even had a code word for African American patrons. They called them "Canadians," and until reading this entire thread, I had no idea that Canadians (proper) were such poor tippers. They would even make bets as to whether or not a gratuity would be given.

And not to meander into yet another retelling of yet someone else's experience, but my wife reluctantly admitted the same having worked in the service industry for more than 15 years, and recounted for me multiple instances, whereby while working at Papadeaux's in Houston, the Houston Rockets would come in and run up a huge tab. She said that they were rude, unruly, and so cheap that they even tried to walk a huge tab on one occasion. The one occasion that stuck out in her mind as being the worst example or best example of poor gratuity as it were, was a night were she had only the Rockets (as she could scarcely handle any other tables while catering to the demands of an entire sports team), they ran up a several thousand dollar tab and tipped her $20.00. They stayed from the beginning of her shift until closing, and that's all she made that night.

Needless to say, there are exceptions to every rule, but we are talking about trends and averages, where after something happens enough it begins to emerge as a trend. When a group notices a trend that is, at least on the surface, associated with perceived poor behavior on the part of another group, the group whose undesirable behavior trend is being pointed out seems to pull out the word stereotype to attempt to invalidate the validity of the other groups observations, especially when the groups in question are disparate ethnic groups.

I think that there are several factors at play here, and I think they are difficult for us as a society to talk openly about because there are racists among us and when someone's race is singled out as being bad about this or that, we become defensive. Since I have already rambled on quite a bit, I will attempt to be brief in describing why I believe a majority of African American People to tip disproportionately low for the level of service received, or not at all. I do not believe that African American people tip the way they do due to economic factors, or that he % that do is so small as not to merit mention. I believe that it can be summed up by one word with many many causes. Attitude. I believe that African American people (again, aggregate and on average, not every single African American Person) have an adverse attitude about tipping for several reasons which I will list here:

1. Adversity to paying more than is explicitly due because they feel they are somehow being duped by a "system" that has wronged them before.
2. Negative association and resentment at the idea of giving a person money out of their pockets for "serving" them, since at one time they were forced into service.
3. A marked lack of social grace due to lack of knowledge brought about by a lack of knowledge resources or role models.
4. The continued perpetuation (by African American Activists and Political figures) of the idea that some reparation or repayment is owed African American people today for the sins our current White America's ancestors. I believe that this helps to perpetuate a since of entitlement, resentment for that demands of that entitlement not being met, and a lack of motivation in the current generation of young African Americans, while they wait for something external to themselves to change their situation.
5. The almost complete absence of an African American Middle Class, OR at least it's absence in the media, if that is a perceptual blind on my part, I apologize, but ever since the Cosby show went off the air, there have been almost no beacons of middle class success to guide young African Americans. It seems to the casual observer that African American Children have very few places to look in order to know how to be successful unless you are a talk show host, an athlete, a musician, or a gangster. Those limited career paths are going to leave a lot of people feeling disenfranchised, forgotten, neglected and hopeless. All those things, especially hopelessness, breed poverty, ignorance, and sap the will of a people to have successive generations rise above the accomplishments of the previous generation. The African American community as a whole has stagnated, and for as long as free African American people have lived in the U.S. they still have not fully assimilated or integrated successfully in to American culture, because they reject it, presumably because they were rejected by it early on. Instead of integrating, they have spawned and embraced a fledgling subculture, which to a large extent is extremely unhealthy in it's stances toward community (even amongst themselves), other ethnic groups, women, education, etc. By embracing the tenants of this subculture, generations of African American people are either knowingly or unwittingly (I have no way of knowing) assuring they they will not be employable due to education, their inability to user proper English in a business setting, their dress, demeanor, and attitude of hopelessness, entitlement, and disenfranchised-ness. The negativity of this subculture is compounded as those who woefully embrace it, also apply incredible pressure on those fringe members that would seek to abandon it in favor of things like an education, seeking out a mentor or role model, or basically doing anything to improve their situation, often times accusing those looking for a way out of "selling out" or not "keeping it real." It seems to be a vicious cycle of feeling hopelessly locked outside of a system that you despise, yet that if you don't eventually adopt, you'll be locked into a pattern of failure that will entirely consume you and any hope of positive change.

I realize that I covered a lot of ground there, but if you really want an answer to the original question in this thread, I think it is important to get below the surface and understand the cause of the issue, not just banter back and forth about whether or not the symptom actually exists. Of course it does. That's why there have been studies on it. That's why you can search it on Google and find volumes of pages of comments about this singular subject. Given the pervasiveness of anecdotal evidence on the internet to the contrary, saying that this phenomenon does not exist is like saying that porn doesn't exist. That part of the conversation is over and those denying are yelling blindly into the ears of a deaf giant. Quit trying to combat the FACT that this phenomenon exists, since doing so is fruitless, and do, if you do anything, what was requested in the original question. Try to address WHY it happens. That's the hard part. Not sitting here finger pointing trying to tell someone that they don't know what they know. It's obviously not a matter of opinion as to whether this happens on a large enough scale to generalize that as an aggregate group, on average that poor tipping by African American patrons does in fact happen. Break a sweat, dig deep into uncomfortable territory, and do as I have done, try to get to the heart of the matter, the cause of the symptom, the answer to the question that was asked. You risk nothing going back and forth debating whether or not this happens. You risk everything when you give your opinion as to why it does. Take some risk, put some skin in the game and answer the question.

I apologize if my answer to this question, or my contribution to this debate has offended anyone, and it is my hope that by contributing, I have helped, if nothing else, to get people thinking and talking, instead of fighting.

Liana while your are correct on a technical level servers get paid thru specific instances which get told on websites like this. I have taken graduate level marketing research course work and can do a multivariate analysis on data using SPSS I self taught myself for a mainframe. Bottom line blacks as a rule tip poorly from my experience it cuts across on a racial line not a socio-economic one. Feel free to document the data all you one. Read below because I think alot of it is of a more qualitative than a quantitative dynamic going on. OK folks the tech speak endth.

I currently work in a place with nightly live music mostly jazz of a variety of favors. The city has a long history in jazz and blues and most of the performers locally are black. Our menu gets called soul food tho I consider it Southern as its the same food I grew up eating with a few plates being something my dad grew up eating like Oxtails.

Thus we see a large number of black guests. For example this past Friday night was slow and I had 8 white people and all the rest were black I would estimate them to total 30 people. It is common to wait a section where all your guests are black. We have on busy nights a 2 hour wait and the food is good enough folks will wait that long.

I first waited tables out in the country in college in a county full of dairy farms and a college so there I waited infrequently on Hispanic families from the dairy farms.

In my experiences the black tables are worse to wait on because they as a general rule tip least, are ruder, messier, the kids run amuck, and try to get something for nothing more often.

This can range from complaining at the drop of a hat to the manager and/or for no legitimate reason. I do this for a living IF I thing a table has a problem with me or the restaurant my manager is already on alert about the situation.

Other example is asking for a bourbon and coke lite ice and expecting more alcohol to replace the ice. Another is expecting wine glasses to be filled to the top. A legal wine pour in Texas in 5 oz on a red wine glass which most places use only, 5 oz is just above the widest point on the glass NOT the top of the glass. A less wide glass used for white wine is filled closer to the top than a red glass. Had this complaint just last night.

That all said I think personally I think some of the problems with black tables comes from a selfulfiling prophecy kinda thing. Servers expect to be tipped for shit. The guest comes in expecting to be treated poorly. Being a server is like working a triage station you devote your efforts on the tables that will gain you the most income we would be fools not to.

THUS the server devotes less of their time and focus on black guest whether its conscious or subconscious. The black guest picks up on the situation and gets aggravated and treat the server poorly. And it just perpetuates the cycle.

Kinda like the argument all guys are dogs and the dogs respond all women are bitches. And the dating games just keep going on and on...
