Hey Douchebag, If It’s Cold At Your House, It’s Gonna Be Cold At The Restaurant.
Backstory: I’m driving to work today at 3:30pm and I pass a bank telling me it’s 56 degrees. That’s in the afternoon. End of backstory.
A family walks in and complains that it’s “too dang cold in this here restaurant”. They then order a round of drinks and leave before the drinks get out to them because “it’s too cold for their baby and it was cold when they came last time”.
Your complaint may have been valid, sir, if you were wearing something other than A FRICKIN’ T-SHIRT AND JEAN SHORTS.
Firstly, anyone wearing jorts should not be taken seriously. Secondly, anyone that wears shorts and a t-shirt out and dresses their small child as if it were the middle of August does not deserve to even have a child to dress wrong.
The mom, of course, was wearing a skirt and a blouse.

Black people eh? All the same…
November 21st, 2006 at 3:56
thats really stupid. Why the hell would you go all the way to a restaurant and not stay? You’re already there.
Though I hate it when it is summer or even winter, and some places have the AC on as cold/high as it can go. I value warmth because I am always cold. But then I just steal my boyfriends sweater and it is all good.
I find it really shocking how little people tip. I always tip as much as i can. I remember one time me and a bunch of my girlfriends left a tip of like $10 for a $25 meal. Maybe I was just brought up to be a good tipper. Even my boyfriend tips at least 20% or more.
November 21st, 2006 at 5:12
those damn poor tipping negroes.Go home..and lkeave us good tippers in America..the land of the Brave men and women who killed all the native americans.
November 21st, 2006 at 7:40
i can’t stand it when the old people ask for the AC to be turned down/off when it’s fucking 80 degrees outside and no one, NO ONE else would appreciated the temo being adjusted.
as for the sheist-meister tip, shockin indeed…NOT!
and Ryan—am i the only one who sees microscopic text on these comments? i can’t see shit! lol
November 21st, 2006 at 3:23
Hahaha who would wear shorts to a restaurant in general, let alone in 56 degree weather. ugh. Even in the summer I’ll wear jeans ’cause restaurants usually are pretty freezing, but the only time I’d even complain is when I’m wearing a sweater and still shaking. Poor baby though.
November 21st, 2006 at 5:28
wow ryan, they way you speak of african americans fits the perfect republican stereotype. im sure your republican god loves the way you and your party speak of the people he supposedly created.
November 21st, 2006 at 5:45
I’m about as liberal as they come, and that doesn’t change the fact that black people and old people tend to tip poorly. And If there’s a “god,” I doubt he’d mind it being pointed out.
November 21st, 2006 at 7:41
Black people tip poorly. I don’t care if that makes me a racist. It’s real.
P.S. “With this bill (The Civil Rights Act of 1964) I’ll have those niggers voting democrat for a thousand years.” - Lyndon B. Johnson, Democrat.
Oops.
November 22nd, 2006 at 4:54
Blacks tip poorly. Asian people are bad drivers. Jews are tight. White people are rednecks.
That’s how it is, right?
Not only do you serve idiots, you ARE an idiot. If you don’t like the tips you get, go find yourself another job. In the meantime, keep your racist beliefs to yourself.
November 22nd, 2006 at 5:40
stereotypes are almost ALWAYS based on some truth - that’s how they get started.
i think that just about everyone will agree that there are always exceptions to the rules, of course.
but somewhere along the line, enough black people tipped poorly compared to other races to get this thing started.
and if you’ve never been a server and seen it firsthand, i suggest you walk into the nearest family-style restaurant and ask the servers what their experiences have been.
at the restaurant where i work - there are several black servers that will PAY other servers to take their black tables.
why?
because they’ve had enough black tables to know that it is COMMON (not in every single case, however) to have them run your ass off for things they “need” i.e extra sour cream or salad dressing that they never touch and tip less than 10%.
and thats all i have to say about that.
i type all of this, keeping in mind that the worst tip i ever received was from a white table.
November 22nd, 2006 at 6:14
Actually, Jewish people tip me a lot better than black people.
I don’t truly see it as “racist” or “stereotypical” when I’m talking about my own experiences. Would it help if I wrote exact tips and averages over a week to explain why I say the things I do? Oh wait, I already did. Go look back a few pages.
Sara, I’ve gotten stiffed more times from white people…but overall on average, the tips are the best from white tables.
November 23rd, 2006 at 1:12
I didn’t understand what you meant by the black people tipping you $2 of a $35 dollar tab, as I couldn’t work out if that was meant to be good or bad.
Perhaps, it just where I live, but generally speaking people only tend to tip *at all* if they’ve received exceptional service, and usually at around 10%, although I’d have to say this is in more expensive restaurants - I’ve never seen anyone tip in the sort of place you can get a meal for two for as little as $35.
November 23rd, 2006 at 6:43
All he’s doing is pointing out his experiences, and the best label he can give for these bad tippers is “Black.” It would be racist if he said black people are always bad tippers, or if he made the claim without anything to back it up.
Then again, just because he said it it doesn’t make it true. If you’re got an issue with it prove him wrong.
November 23rd, 2006 at 6:44
Whoops, make that you’ve*
November 23rd, 2006 at 9:23
I am black and I waited tables for 7 years. It really sucked for me because since I was black, i would always get sat with the black tables. $2 seems to be the standard for tips. It doesn’t matter if it’s a $10 tab or $100 tab, it was always in the neighborhood of $2 give or take a few cents. Showin no love for a fellow brutha. Once I asked a table if I had given them bad service, and they proceeded to call me a house nigga and I should appreciate what they gave me. Whatever, we tip like shit, (me not included).
November 24th, 2006 at 7:33
I’m black too and let me tell you…black people are the WORST TIPPERS!!!
I’ve been serving for about two years now and it’s once in a blue moon that some black guy will tip me more than 5%.
Hey, fellow brothas! Tip more and we won’t have guys writing about how bad we suck at tipping in his blog! It’s THAT EASY!
November 27th, 2006 at 11:52
P.S. So why do we need to know the tippers were black?
November 28th, 2006 at 1:04
Black people leave tips… just not for racists. They’re easily identified. So stop being racist and get your tip on.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:41
Haha yeah Ryan, you’re obviously doing something wrong with every black table you’ve gotten and it’s got nothing to do with their race…
People are such fucking morons and so many are out of touch with reality. Try waiting tables for a summer you judgmental fucks.
November 29th, 2006 at 12:52
I’m an African American waitress and I can tell you that Blacks DO tend to the tip the worst, run you around the most, and expect all this grandiose treatment just because we’re from the same race. Never mind that I have 5 other tables and never mind that I could get fired for giving away free food.
Black women are the worst. The older, fatter, or uglier the meaner. They take advantage of the fact that you’re in a service position for them. These two broads even tried to make up stuff that wasn’t on the menu, gave me attitude from the moment I went up to their table, and sucked their teeth and rolled their eyes when I’d try to explain why ALL of our meals didn’t come with fries(This isn’t fucking McDonald’s). When I transferred them to someone else (I refused to deal with them) they slipped $3 into the server’s hand like they did him some kind of favor.
They don’t read menus, they’ll be loud and obnoxious, even talking shite about other customers around them, and if the manager says anything they pull the race card. If I say anything, I’m a sell out- So yeah, I hand over all my black tables for the most part. I’d rather wait on Asians than Blacks…and they can be just AS annoying and just as cheap.
November 29th, 2006 at 2:41
fragdoll420 you couldn’t be a more obvious poseur if you tried.
LMBAO!!
November 29th, 2006 at 11:33
Erm….what makes her a poser? I don’t know, she sounded legitimate to me. Whateves.
November 30th, 2006 at 1:21
first of all how about the fact that black people built this country with their own bare hands and therefore they belong in America. I mean, not that we even want to be here, but OH YEAH! thats right, white people dragged us here on boats and killed most of us in the process, and the ones that were left were made to work our butts off to build this country!!! but thats not even what makes me mad, because i can’t hate you for what your ancestors did. what i hate is that you first of all are assuming that all black people tip badly. i know that everytime i have gone somewhere and tipped that i always give 20% and thats even when the service is kinda sketchy. maybe you’re so hateful and bad at your job (which i’m only assuming since no one works hard on things that they hate, and you clearly hate your job since you write a website about it) that you did not give them good service and they didn’t think that you deserved a good tip. but even if that is not the case, there is no reason to assume that all black people tip badly, and if you think that’s a fact then you are obviously void of common sense. race is determined by some alleles, pure science. that a fact. race does not determine how you tip, and all black people are not the same (as one of your repliers wrote). i’m sure that you won’t have anything rational to say to this, but i just wanted to get an actual black person’s opinion on here (fragdoll420 seems hate her people), because you are clearly wrong. if only you could be black for a little while, you’d see how messed up people like you are. just because a person does something wrong to you, doesn’t mean you can just look at their phenotype and assume all people of their phenotype are that way. maybe when you grow up you’ll see my point.
November 30th, 2006 at 1:23
by the way, its nice to see a racist who’s not undercover. much easier to identify you creeps.
November 30th, 2006 at 1:34
Now, it’s obvious i don’t need to get involved. It seems you have enough people a little upset with your comments. Please keep reading, i have nothing to say but the truth and i promise no vulgar language.
- I understand this is your blog website and you have every right to make watever comments you feel like
- Some people like to stereotype, some people don’t. you seem like one that does.
- Maybe you should create a nother blog site that reads ‘iservepoortippers’. This will help separate your sometimes funny situations with the poorly worded racist comments that you make.
- Lastly, calling black people poor tippers is kinda racist. It’s an unfair prejudice and you should be careful how you shoot your mouth here and not in public. Maybe i’m wrong
Anyway, i am one of the few non-African American people that are quite disturbed by your comments but still find your other non-racial prejudice stories quite funny. Please consider saving your ‘upsetting’ stories for close friends and not for the general internet public to rant and start posts that end up being 30 comments long.
Good Day Ryan.
P.S. Excuse my spelling mistakes
November 30th, 2006 at 1:49
Remember that episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry goes out to lunch with with African American techie guy and the AA guy says that he’ll cover the tip, but ends up tipping poorly and Larry has to top up the tip?
Great show.
November 30th, 2006 at 2:56
@ slinkydinky: Curb Your Enthusiasm is a television show… just like Crash is a movie. IOW, you’re basing your adherance to a stereotype on a scripted performance by paid actors.
Here’s something real: Myself and 9 adult friends plus 11 children (all Black), took limos to see the final performance of The Lion King, a year ago, here in Chicago. After enjoying a wonderful late Sunday afternoon and then pulling up at our destination… all of the adult males (5) tipped their drivers $20 a piece and 3 of the ladies did the same. How do I know this? Because as we gathered together after exiting the lemos, the first line of discussion was, “How’re we gonna take care of the drivers?” We were well aware that we’d payed the livery company, already. Imagine that, Black folk tipping like that.
November 30th, 2006 at 3:03
For the record I do not support stereotyping in any way, this whole discussion just reminded me of that and I enjoyed seeing Larry get into trouble over that.
November 30th, 2006 at 3:19
@ Day, Ryan Edward: No, I won’t be spreading your link around because (1) there’s nothing unique about this argument, and (2) there’s no such thing as a creative bigot. So why you spewing more of the same? I would think there’d be enough going on back in the kitchen for you to blog about.
November 30th, 2006 at 3:25
I’ve only caught maybe 3 episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and it was funny. Larry David has an extremely funny wit. Excuse me for assuming you were adhering to stereotypes.
November 30th, 2006 at 9:50
I thought the only “way” to mend racial tensions was to have “honest” discussions. there are differences between observations and opinions. Its an Observation that Ryan had 2 black people tip 2 dollars on a 35.00 tab. the “surprise”, is sarcasm- an opinion, saying he is not surprised.
so now any kind of observation is racist?
I think a better idea would be that African Americans hear what people think- in this case, they tip poorly- and thus will always get shitty service. however, instead im sure they’ll likely take the shitty service as some passive racism - and they get to walk home, content in their self-righteous “oppression” why fix things when you can scream “racist”.
but instead of having an “honest” discussion. ryan should shut his mouth because any kind of negative observation on black people is inherantly racist.
what kind of bullshit logic is that?
December 14th, 2006 at 5:58
I’ve been on both sides of the restaurant thing. I had the misfortune of working at a family restaurant in high school.
I’m AfAm female.
I don’t have statistics on tipping. I DO know that men generally tip better than women.
I had one friend that left a shitty tip. I just quietly supplemented it so that we wouldn’t fit the stereotype. I have this tendency to overcompensate in the tip area. If I get shitty service, I leave a dollar w/ a message written on it about “why you got such a shit tip - no it’s not b/c I’m black”
The problem w/ many people is a lack of socialization stemming from segregation. YES, I know de jure seg is over. However, bear in mind that segregation kept Blacks from restaurants. When some raised their children, they didn’t take them to restaurants. I strongly suspect that many people don’t KNOW this etiquette as they were raised by people who did not have a reason to know this etiquette. My parents took us to restaurants from the time we were toddlers on. The point was to familiarize us w/ the situation. However, my father did not go into a formal (INTEGRATED) restaurant until he was 21 YEARS OLD!
December 14th, 2006 at 6:14
No, I understand that. And I also understand that blacks have only had 40 or so years to adjust to integration. And women have only had about 100. I understand all of it. What I don’t understand is people (unlike yourself) who are ignorant of all that and want to just blame me (the server) and his bad service for the bad tips. Am I really so bad a person that I only give white people good service and black people bad service? No, I’m not. So then why do some (not you) people on this site insist on assuming so?
Now that I think about it, how many black people have you had as servers as compared to white people? It’s definitely less proportionate than the population of blacks in America than whites.
December 18th, 2006 at 2:21
Great discussion! I am amazed by the truncations of free speech from those who claim emancipation as a cornerstone of their current place in society.
Still there’s hope. I’m a Iramerican (that’s “Irish American” to you unitiated) and let me tell you, Afromericans should take hope. See, we Iramerians were discriminated against for decades. In NYC they didn’t even put the names of our dead children in the obituraries…when they died, they were just “irish child dies” in the death registers of the day, if they were lucky. (and brothers, believe me. In the 19th century, Irish children died in droves due to neglect, starvation, privation sweat shop slavery, etc.)
Ryan’s data on tipping is just that. DATA. Don’t deny his experience just because you don’t like the implications. If you don’t like the data, gather your own that refutes his and present it. Oh, Ryan… how do the Irish you’ve served tip? Good, mediocre, or crappy?
p.s. I notice that there’s a sports team that still calls us “Fighting Irish” clearly implying that we’re drunken brawlers. Wow, Imagine a sports team called “The Stocky Negros” or “The Watermelon Eaters”! The culture nazis would flip.

I’d root for “The Penny-Pinching, Deceptive Jews”. I’d even buy a jersey! =D

black person named ashely obviously doesn’t understand common sense and reason because everything she says was explained clearly and rationally in the previous posts. she is just on her period and doesnt have any friends and will never have sex.
