Is It Still Racist If It’s Actually True?
Note: If you’ll notice, I don’t ONCE state anything in the following post about preference in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, etc… Furthermore, any and all comments that are not written by me in reference to this blog cannot and will not be taken as my own personal opinion.
Last night really got me thinking: Is the old stereotype true? Do black people TRULY tip less than white people, or is it all just racist conjecture? Over the last few days (i.e. three) I’ve been keeping track of my tips and who exactly gave them to me. (For the sake of this experiment, I omitted gender because for the most part, men pay. Even feminists recognize this to be true. Suck it.)
Starting last Friday and ending last night (Wednesday) I made a total of $233.15 in tips. (That’s three days of work: Friday, Monday and Wednesday.) Now that number isn’t how much I ACTUALLY made, just how much I made before I tipped out the bar, busboys and chefs.
During those three days of work, my total sales for my restaurant came to just under $1,200 dollars. That’s a little over 19%. Again, I’m not that bad a waiter. I just encounter idiots. Now here’s the breakdown:
White people - $889.96 in sales and $186.89 in tips. 21% tips. That’s good. Especially considering the fact that where I work is a higher-end establishment. And it’s Asian, and they’re always more expensive.
Black people - $296.32 in sales and $46.26 in tips. Just above 15%.
Just the facts, ma’am. Just the facts.
I will hand it to black people, though. I was NEVER stiffed. Not once. Two white couples stiffed me in the past THREE DAYS OF WORKING. And it was a black couple that actually gave me my biggest tip of the week.
My intent with this was not to be a racist. I don’t embellish. I’ve just gotten a fair share of emails asking for a story about how white and black people tip in my restaurant.

i acutally have a worse time with mexicans. i dont get very many black clientel because i work at an old white people restaurant lol. but mexicans always travel in families….and tip less than 6% everytime. it’s a culture thing.

Ok, just found the blog, and just ran into this story ‘cuz you linked to it in today’s post. In my experience, I have to agree completlely. Some of the best tippers are blacks and asians, but overall blacks do tip a smaller percentage, and whites are generally the only guests who stiff me. Mexicans are a whole different story: $2. Four-top: $80 check: $2 tip. Two-top: $30 check: $2 tip. Eight-top: $150 check: $2 tip. Get the point? And I’m mexican (but I tip better when I go out). That said, each of these guests got the same top-notch service (I do average better than 20% overall after tipping support staff) regardless of race, or what I predicted their tip would be, even if they asked for White-Zin.
